About a month ago, I updated my Best Lead Actress predictions and became the first (that I know of) that told you the competition would come down to Natalie Portman (Black Swan) vs. Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right). Shortly after, the trailer for Black Swan debuted, and the buzz on Portman began to grow slightly. Now, a few critics have seen the film and are declaring Portman a lock for a Best Actress nomination.

Why am I telling you this? First of all, remember where you heard it first! But more importantly, if Lead Actress comes down to a Kids vs. Swan showdown, wouldn’t it be interesting to see the Supporting Actress pull a duplicate rivalry?
Currently, I have Julianne Moore downgraded to Supporting so that she and Bening don’t split votes. Assuming that’s the case, it would be pretty incredible if the Supporting category dealt us a Barbara Hershey (Black Swan) vs. Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) showdown?
Now THAT’S the type of drama Oscar watchers would love to get behind!
The big release this week actually came out Wednesday, September 1st. I am talking about The American, starring George Clooney, of course.
The early word seems very mixed on this one. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, whereas other reviews I have read gave it a shocking 1 star rating. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of in between with The American. It seems you will either love it or hate it. From most reports, it seems if you can be patient, and enjoy the stillness of the film, then you will most likely lean more towards the Ebert end of the spectrum.
I, for one, have it circled as the must see this week.
If highbrow, espionage films starring one of the best actors working today is not your thing, then no need to worry. There are several other interesting choices that may fit your preferences out this weekend.
