Best of the 90’s: 10-1

Posted by Mark Johnson On July - 14 - 201010 COMMENTS

And so we bring my Best of the 90′s series to an end.

One of the things that I learned along the way is that there are a lot of great films from this decade I have yet to see, and still others I need to revisit.  Especially when it comes to foreign language fims and documentaries.

I spent most of this decade growing up, not becoming an adult until the decade was already more than half way over.  I think that explains a lot of the questionable choices on the list (see Mrs. Doubtfire and Rudy).  These were the films I grew up on, you could say, and saw with youthful eyes.  I think if I had experienced this decade at the age I am now it might look completely different.  And that just might be one of the many beauties of film.

Every five years I revise my top 100 films of all time list for this reason exactly.  That, and for the reason that there are always going to be new great films coming out that will need consideration.  In fact, I am working on finalizing my 3rd revision of my all time list, and will be posting those films individually on the site soon enough.

I hope, for the most part, that you have enjoyed this look back at one of the better decades in movie history with me.

I’d love to know what you think about my top 10 selection, but especially what I chose as the greatest film of the 90′s.  If you disagree, I’d love to know what you consider to be the best film from this decade.

We are just about done with my Best of the 90′s project.  This portion of the list includes two Best Picture winners as well as the best foreign language film that I saw in the decade.

Let me hear what you think about these choices.  I’d love to hear back from you on what you loved/hated about any of the films in this portion.

Now we are getting down to it!

I am a huge fan of all of the remaining films on the list.  As I am sure most of you are too.  There are ome really great directors represented in this section.   Al is back with two films in this grouping, and Tom has three!

So you know the drill by now.  Let me hear what you think about these choices!  I’d love to hear back from you on what you loved/hated about any of the films in this portion.

In this portion of my 100 Greatest Films of the 1990′s, we have the highest ranked animated film, along with the first Oscar winner for Best Picture.

Do you agree/disagree with my assessment on what I feel is the best animated film from this decade?  Would you agree/disagree on what I feel was the 10th ranked best picture winner from the 90′s?

I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on any of the films in this section, whether you loved them or hated them, or whether they are too high on my list or not high enough.

Best of the 90′s: 50-41

I took some heat on the last segment for not having American History X high enough.  I loved your feedback, and I don’t disagree with much that was said.  I do think our great readers are a little drama-heavy as far as genres go, which is great!  I prefer drama over comedy as well.  I just think comedies always get the shaft when it comes to top 100 lists.

The great thing about a top 100 list is that there are an infinite amount of variations possible.  I think there are only a handfull of films that if left off, would make a list less correct than others.  In other words, if I have American History X at #55, and you have it at #17, then to each his own, right?  But to leave a film such as, say, Schindler’s List off of a Top 100 films of the 90′s list altogether would be where the boo’s and hisses should come flying in.  The most important elements of a top 100 list, in my opinion, come in two parts:  What made the top 10?  and What movies were not included?

In short, no top 100 list is right.  But there are some that are wrong.  At least that’s my belief.

I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on any of the films in this section, whether you loved them or hated them, or whether they are too high on my list or not high enough.  I really do love hearing back from you all, and thank you for the comments!!

Best of the 90’s: 60-51

In this segment of my 100 Best Films of the 90′s list, you get a double dipping of Brad Pitt, a three-peat of Ed Norton, and two films where “X” marks the spot  (I can hear the groaning now at my weak attempt at humor).

Best of the 90′s: 70-61

And now we continue with my 100 Greatest Films of the 90′s!  The film that I mentioned last week as my last minute addition appears in this segment.  I only wish I would have seen it earlier or at least a second time before needing to add it to my 100.  I have a feeling that it may be a little too low on this list.  But I will leave that up for you to decide, if you can guess which one it was!

Best of the 90′s: 80-71

Posted by Mark Johnson On June - 16 - 20105 COMMENTS

Ok, so remember when I said I hadn’t quite finished watching all the films that I wanted to see before starting my list of the 100 Greatest Films of the 90′s?  Well, as it turns out, one of the films I had previously not seen now belongs on this list.  I know I’m going to get some crap for this, but rather than start over or bump anything out, I’m just going to create a tie at #80, thus leaving room as we continue down the list for the film I feel I have to add.  In the end, I’d rather my top 100 list include 101 films, than leave this great movie off the list.

   So I hope you understand.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the films in this section, whether you loved them or hated them.
