Oscar Fashion Review: Best Dressed

Posted by Chelsea D. On March - 10 - 2010

Yesterday, I gave you the bad news first with my Top 10 Worst Dressed list from this year’s Oscars and today we have the 10 ladies who got it right.  Again, almost all of my ‘Best’ choices can be found on other‘s ‘Worst’ lists, further highlighting just how subjective fashion can be – unless you‘re wearing a swan dress, in which case everyone can agree you failed.

And now, keeping in line with the short and sweet theme, the winners of Best Dressed are…

See Chelsea’s 10 Best Dressed after the jump…

   10.  Cameron Diaz in Oscar De La Renta - I hate almost everything she wears, but channeling Veronica Lake will get you in my top 10 any day. Diaz looks fabulous in the biggest trend of the night – metallic.

   9.  Elizabeth Banks in Versace - While the style is rather safe, the cut and color of this design are gorgeous on Banks.  The understated jewelry and matching beaded headband were perfect compliments.

   8.  Demi Moore in Atelier Versace - In a similar Versace gown to Elizabeth Banks’, Moore demonstrates how to match your dress with your skin tone without getting lost.  She looks amazing and the only explanation I can find is that, along with Kathryn Bigelow, she’s aging backwards…because 47??  Really?!

   7.  Deborah Ann Woll in Nicole Miller - The True Blood star looks amazing in this lilac Nicole Miller gown.  Mariah Carey take note: this is how you do a slit and plunging neckline without looking cheap.

deborah

   6.  Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab - The pastel watercolors are perfect for Spring and the always stunning McAdams hit just the right age-appropriate note with this choice.

   5.  Kristin Stewart in Monique L’huillier - This navy design is much more sophisticated than Stewart has worn in the past, but she wears it very well… and looks decidedly less awkward than usual.

kristin

   4.  Tina Fey in Michael Kors - She was roasted after her Golden Globe fashion faux pas, but Fey rebounded in a big way with the help of Vogue editors and one of the best American designers out there.  She looked glam and extra confident this time around.

   3.  Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka - Now that’s how you dress curves.  The color is gorgeous and compliments her skin tone and the beaded single shoulder strap is elegant and perfectly placed.  The Queen of Rap has an amazing stylist, because she rarely disappoints on the red carpet.

   2.  Kate Winslet in Yves Saint Laurent - I love her.  That’s all I can really say.   She’s amazing in everything she wears, but especially in this 40’s-inspired silver gown. (The $2.5 million Cartier necklace doesn’t hurt, either.)

kate

   1.  Meryl Streep in Chris March - Let it be known: I did not give her the top spot on my list as a consolation prize.  The truth is, because she misses the mark fashion-wise more often than not, I was actually scared of what she was going to wear out of fear I’d have to put her on the worst list after her potential loss to Sandra Bullock and then I’d have to face all of you.  Thank God she went with Chris March (one of my favorite Project Runway alums and the designer of her gorgeous Golden Globes gown) because she saved me from the Witness Protection Program.  Last night she looked the absolute picture of grace and elegance.  Too bad they don’t give Oscars for best dressed.  She would have won hands down.

Honorable mentions:  Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, Sigourney Weaver, Sarah Jessica Parker, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Meryl was an absolute Goddess at the Oscars! As soon as I saw her, I knew she would be #1 on a lot of lists! Great choice!

  2. Chelsea says:

See, you’re not as fashion-challenged as you think. :)

  3. Bianca says:

Ha! you did, Mark. When you saw only her face and the neck line. I think you said something about Queen Latifah too. I really liked Demi’s, I think Holly, did too…although she seemed to really like Sandra’s.

  4. Mark Johnson says:

Chelsea – I am definitely fashion challenged! I just can’t justify spending the extra money on clothing when there are SOOOO many movies I still need to own on DVD!

Bianca – Witness!! She just looked stunning that night. She fooled me into thinking she may still win for a second there…

  5. Chelsea says:

Trust me, I wish I could do a 10 Best and Worst Dressed using everyone at work…and you wouldn’t be anywhere near the worst. You’re just the Michael Kors of the movie world. Unless it’s a black tie event, he only ever wears some variation of a black blazer, with a black t-shirt, jeans and black shoes. :)

  6. melanie anderson says:

Sandra bullock, to my dismay, was breath taking, she should have made the list, as well as helen miran, who is always perfect classy elegant beauty. Rachel McAdams, I thought was not a best dressed at all. I do however, think cherlize theron looked beautiful and didn’t get the due credit she deserved.

  7. melanie anderson says:

And deborah’s dress was awful. I have no clue how she made the best dressed list?? The should have put monique on that list, she looked beautiful and so classy.

  8. Lisa "Team Streep" Sims says:

This is absolutely fabulous! Meryl at the #1. YES! Exactly where I put her…for the Oscar AND Best Dressed. ;-)

  9. Chelsea says:

Well..like I said, “Again, almost all of my ‘Best’ choices can be found on other‘s ‘Worst’ lists, further highlighting just how subjective fashion can be – unless you‘re wearing a swan dress, in which case everyone can agree you failed.” :)

    Thanks Lisa!

  10. Mark Johnson says:

Ha! Lisa!! I KNEW you would be happy!!

  11. Thomas Quang says:

Sorry for the late response. I just saw this list today. Your #1 & #2 choices are outstanding. Meryl knows how to dress her age. I loved Kate Winslett too but one of the fashion review shows on one of the entertainment news channels thought that her dress was too simple and that she needed to be a little more “adventurous” for lack of a better word. But OMG!!! Sandra Bullock not in the top 10??? She is my #1 overall. She looked like an angel. Was her dress too boring for you? Overall, great job with both lists! Wow, I’m really impressed Chelsea. You really are a fashionista. Maybe you should do this for a career:)

  12. Chelsea says:

I wanted to put Sandra in the Top 10 because I did love her dress and as a person I think she’s adorable and genuine, but I felt like there were other people who made riskier choices and pulled them off really well, and therefore deserved a spot in the Top 10. So, that’s where I was with that. And I can see why someone would think Kate wasn’t very adventurous, but she’s humble and I would bet my house that she took into account the fact that she was there to present an award and it wasn’t her place to overshadow someone in their moment. So I thought her dress was perfect for her and for what she was there to do.

Overall, it was REALLY hard to only pick 10 Best. I could have chosen 20. People were really on the ball this year. I edited and re-edited..and edited again. I even had Sarah Jessica at #7 at one point. :)

And thank you…fashion is my major, so, I’m trying! :)

  13. Thomas Quang says:

So who is your favorite designer overall Chelsea? Mine is still Versace. RIP Gianni…

  14. Chelsea says:

Favorite ever is Edith Head. She did a lot of designing outside of the movies for her famous friends and I love everything about her. Like, borderline in love. :) But, besides her..I love Chanel, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga, Christian Siriano, Marchesa, Rock & Republic, Victoria Beckham, Tom Ford…oh my gosh, don’t get me started. I’ll just go on and on…and on. Classic with an edge is usually what I’m drawn to. :)

btw, I was in Miami 2 years ago and got to see the Versace Mansion…it was beautiful and heart breaking all at the same time. :(
