I think one of my favorite parts from Sunday night’s show was Tom Hanks’ quick and to-the-point presentation of the Best Picture award. So, in keeping with that tradition, I will get right to my Top 10 Worst Dressed picks from the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. And, as always, I would love to know what you think.
The good news is that it was actually pretty hard to find 10 dresses to deem the worst of the night. I think that just further adds to my feeling that this decade will continue to make up for the last 20+ years of fashion. In fact, every dress I have on the Worst list can be found on quite a few Best lists out there. It seems people were split across the board.

Top 10 Worst Dressed:
10. Virginia Madsen in Kevan Hall - It’s not that this is a particularly bad dress, it’s just not very exciting, is rather matronly and her hair is straight out of the 90’s. She can do much better.

9. Jennifer Lopez and Amanda Seyfried in Armani Privé - The cuts of their gowns are pretty enough, but the fact that they both appear to be wearing bubble wrap is too distracting and unfortunate to overlook.

8. Molly Ringwald in Todd Thomas - The overall look becomes costume-like with the Cleopatra hair and jewelry. Not to mention the bracelet looks like it’s growing out of her forearm.

7. Mariah Carey in Valentino - Poor Mariah. The girl just cannot dress. Something about this gown is frumpy and age-inappropriate all at the same time.

6. Diane Kruger in Chanel - I love Diane’s fashion forward choices usually, but this look has too much going on to be a success.

5. Georgina Chapman in Marchesa - Chapman is one half of the design duo behind Marchesa (one of my favorite labels) and I was extremely disappointed with this choice. If you’re going to wear your label on the world’s biggest stage, why would you choose this mess of a dress?

4. Vera Farmiga in Marchesa - Two Marchesa failures in the top 5? What is the world coming to? This gown is too flamenco and too large and is the perfect example of the dress wearing the girl.

3. Faith Hill in Roberto Cavalli - Faith Hill is a beautiful girl, but she makes a lot of poor fashion choices. This is just another bad decision in that long list of offenses.

2. Zoe Saldana in Givenchy - Zoe is another one of my favorite fashionistas. She makes bold choices, obviously, and usually carries them off. This time, however, she missed the mark. The top is gorgeous, but it doesn’t go with the skirt…which seems to be growing out of control.

1. Charlize Theron in Dior - You probably didn’t even notice it was her because you never made it past the rosettes to look at her face. Why would such a beautiful girl do that to herself? It’s beyond me.

Honorable mentions: Anna Kendrick‘s flesh-tone gown, Kathryn Bigelow’s rigid, uninspiring dress (please don’t hurt me!)

i totally agree with this list. thank you chelsea for this brief fashion police.
lol…..i just like cheron in dior dudes……..its perfect for me…and her too….lolz
I can’t argue with your #1 & #2 choices. I could flip flop them. My, my, how Charlize Theron has fallen from grace. Those look like cinnabuns on her dress. I would also put Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Ritchie on this list. Did you see Hilary Swank’s “everything out there” dress? I happen to think Jennifer Lopez and Amanda Seyfried don’t look bad at all. Anna Kendrick’s dress wasn’t bad either. And please take my girl Kathryn Bigelow off this list!!! Her dress is just a little tight, that’s all:)))
What ever happened to the sexy little black dress?
Great list except – I happened to really like Jennifer Lopez. For once, she was classy and elegant. I also l-o-v-e-d Anna Kendrick’s look.
@ Aurea, you’re very welcome.
And to Thomas, I dedicate this novel: I did see Hilary’s dress…but I only included dresses that were on the red carpet, and she was only at the Vanity Fair party afterwards. And, because it was a party, you can get away with a lot more, so I didn’t really hate it. Also, just for fun, I googled “Hilary Swank Oscars 2010″ and the first result was “Hilary Swank: Hollywood fashion home run..” and the second was “Hilary Swank Oscars 2010 hot mess of a dress” – perfect example of how different opinions can be on the same look. Jennifer and Amanda’s dresses were nicely cut and had they been different material, they’d be much, much better. But, they look like bubble wrap and it’s distracting. It ruins the effect for me. Anna’s dress was pretty, but she was too pale to wear it…a different color would have absolutely worked. Pale girls should avoid pale colors because they’re SO hard to pull off against the color of the carpet and camera flashes. And as far as Sarah, Maggie and Nicole, no comment until later today. ():)
oh, and p.s. TECHNICALLY, Kathryn’s not on the list..she’s just an honorable mention.
This was my thought, if you’re going to be the first woman to win Best Director, wear something special. Her dress wasn’t special at all, IMO. It was a little tight, kinda boring and the sequined hearts at the top were somewhat juvenile. She is SOO gorgeous, it just would have been nice to see her wear something worthy of her place in history. So…don’t hate me! I’m still awesome! Promise.
@ Bonnie, they never left..and never will!
Jennifer’s been on the ball the last few years…but it’s the bubble wrap! I just can’t get past it!
I liked the jennifer lopez dress, its better than she usually does. And I agree for the most part. However, number one worst dressed was sara jessica parker, in my opinion. The dress was awful, the hair was awful, just all around a big fat hot mess…..
I agree with everything you said about Hilary Swank & Anna Kendrick. I should have thought about it before opening my mouth. Yes, you are right. Swank was not on the red carpet, just at the Vanity Fair after-party, so she should not be considered for either one of your lists – best and worst dressed. And you are right, Kendrick does have pale skin, so she should be wearing something darker to offset it. What is it with musicians – ala your #3 & your #7? They have no clue how to dress. It’s a good thing you stay away from doing best dressed lists for the Grammys. You would be hard pressed to find one person to make your best dressed list. Doing a worst dressed list, however, would be a piece of cake. BTW, Bigelow not trying to show people up fashion-wise on her special, history making night is just a perfect example of just how classy a person she is.
Here’s my thought about musicians, the Oscars and the Grammys…I regard the two shows on totally different levels…so, what may be ok for the Grammys, would probably not be ok for the Oscars. And what’s just right for the Oscars is probably overdressed for the Grammys, you know? The Grammys just seem somewhat more party-like and a little less formal. Hence why musicians who are invited to the Oscars tend to fail…but, that’s what a great stylist is for, so….Mariah, Faith..call me.
