The Top 10 Greatest Film Characters of the Decade

Posted by Mark Johnson On January - 10 - 2010

This is the beginning of my “Greatest of the 00′s” series.  I am starting with Film Characters today, and will be updating the site throughout the next few weeks with other categories such as quotes, male performances, female performances, scenes, etc.  The top 10 lists will culminate with my top 100 Greatest Movies of the 00′s.  This list only contains characters that were original to film this decade.  So while James Bond and Darth Vader both made appearances in the 00′s, they will not be eligible for this list.  You may wonder then why The Joker would be eligible for this list.  The reason is that The Dark Knight is under a different film franchise than any other movie that included The Joker before.  My list, my rules.  ;)

***Okay, I cheated a little on this one. This is actually two characters, not one. Nicolas Cage plays twin brothers in this film.

  2. Mark Johnson says:

Great list! I don’t think you cheated with the Kaufman’s as one entry. Sometimes a duo must be considered as one. Think of it like this: you couldn’t put just Bonnie or just Clyde as a top 100 character by themselves, they just don’t hold up on there own. However, when you put them together on the list, they almost seem like no brainers, right? Juno was a great addition too!

  3. Thomas Quang says:

Thanks for the feedback! As you can see, I tend to go for the smaller “real life” characters as opposed to the fictional larger than life ones that you have on your list. Nothing wrong with your choices though. Like em too! To each his own I guess huh? You are right with your Bonnie & Clyde analysis. Looking forward to your 10 best female performances of the decade list. I’m already chewing on mine.

  4. Ib-Renè Jorgensen says:

    10. Walt Kowalski(Clint Eastwood)- Gran Torino

    9. Anton Chigurh(Javier Bardem)- No Country For Old Men

    8. Vincent(Tom Ctuise)- Collateral

    7. John Nash(Russel Crowe) – A Beautiful Mind

    6. Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) – Pirates of the Caribbean

    5. Marv(Mickey Rourke) – Sin City

    4. Bill(David Carradine) – Kill Bill vol 2

    3. Col. Landa(Christophe Waltz)- Inglorius Basterds
    2. The Joker(Heath Ledger)- The Dark Knight

    1. Bill The Butcher(Daniel Day Lewis)- Gangs of New York

  5. Mark Johnson says:

Awesome list! Marv was one of my favorite’s as well! So is Bill the Butcher. Daniel Day-Lewis is the man!

  6. eratiti007 says:

I agree with your lists but Smeagol/Gollum isn’t only voiced by Andy Serkis but is represented too with the Motion Capture System.
Other great performance of the decade are Philip Seymour Hoffman for “Capote”, Javier Bardem for “Mar Adentro”, Matthieu Amalric for “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”.
